SRX didn’t turn a profit in its first year, but Evernham says the series has developments that are bolstering its business and should lead to a break-even season in Year 2. It averaged 1.25 million viewers last year, and CBS and SRX have both said that growth this year from that initial base is important. The founders created SRX as a quick-hitting all-star series that only runs for a little over a month and doesn’t directly compete with motorsports properties like NASCAR and Ind圜ar that run closer to the entire year. The short-track series debuted in 2021 with co-founders in Ray Evernham, George Pyne, Tony Stewart and The Montag Group, and with CBS Sports being the multiyear media rights holder. More active NASCAR Cup Series drivers are expected to participate this season versus last year when only Chase Elliott did, amid improving relations between SRX and NASCAR. Series executives are not revealing the driver list this week but they report having around 20 drivers working on participating this season, according to new series CEO Don Hawk, the longtime NASCAR industry executive and former business manager of motorsports icon Dale Earnhardt Sr. The first race is June 18 at the Pensacola track. Newly added are Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla., site of the Snowball Derby race that is prestigious in the grassroots ranks of racing South Boston Speedway in southern Virginia, a track owned by the Mattioli family that also owns Pocono Speedway the I-55 dirt track in Pevely, Mo., that is co-owned by NASCAR legend Ken Schrader and Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, another dirt track that is co-owned by the Blaney family of NASCAR fame. Gone from last year’s slate are Slinger Speedway (Wisconsin), Knoxville Raceway (Iowa), Eldora Speedway (Ohio) and Lucas Oil Raceway (Indianapolis). This year’s slate features four new tracks with a heavier emphasis on the Southeast, versus last year having a bigger emphasis on the Midwest. The short-track series will once again race on six consecutive weekends in the summer on CBS and Paramount+. Superstar Racing Experience this week will reveal its 2022 schedule, one part of a broadening business plan that series executives think will help them see growth in Year 2. ![]()
